LVAD (Left ventricular Assist Device)

Left ventricular assist devices (or LVADs) are used as treatment for patients with end stage heart failure. They are surgically implanted devices that pump blood for the left side of the heart and are battery powered. The most commonly used device is the Heartmate 3. The devices may be used as “bridge to transplant” for patients who may be too sick to receive a heart transplant at time of implantation. The devices may also be used as “destination therapy” or definitive treatment for patients who are not candidates for heart transplantation. The devices require patients to be on blood thinners and to have backup batteries. Randomized clinical trials have found that patients with end stage heart failure live longer and have a better quality of life when having an LVAD vs optimal medical therapy.

We are one of two groups in San Diego that offer LVAD as treatment for end stage heart failure. We have a lot of experience in LVAD implantation and management. Some of our patients have had LVADs for over ten years! If you have end stage heart failure and are looking for treatment options, please contact us.
